While most of us have fine, light hair covering our faces, some women may notice that this hair can be thicker and coarser. This condition is known as hirsutism, and women suffering from it have more visible excess body and facial hair. Although there are many ways to get rid of annoying hair on your face, being proactive and avoiding the factors that might be causing this hair to grow can save you many trips to the beauty salon.
We at Bright Side know that having unwanted facial hair can affect your looks and your mood, and we searched the Internet to find out more about the reasons behind the growth of facial hair.
1. You’re not watching out for your BPA exposure.
When you’re shopping, you’re probably taking the receipt without giving it much thought, but by doing so, you’re actually exposing yourself to bisphenol A, or BPA, a powerful endocrine disruptor that can disturb your hormones. Receipts we usually get at the supermarket contain BPA that is 250 to 1,000 times greater than the amount in canned food.
Your body can absorb this dangerous chemical through the skin, and once it gets into your body, it can affect your reproductive health and your endocrine system, which, in turn, may lead to more unwanted hair. BPA can be found in a variety of products, including water bottles, napkins, and toilet paper, but many manufacturers make sure to remove it from their products and mark them as “BPA-free.”
2. You have no time for workouts.
Even if you lead a very busy life, carving out some time for exercise can help you decrease the growth of facial hair. Being overweight ups your chances of getting unwanted hair on your chin or upper lip, and starting slowly with moderate or low-impact exercises, such as swimming or walking, can help you keep unwanted hair at bay.
3. You eat fish often.
While adding some salmon to your diet is a great way to get more protein, eating it frequently can actually contribute to facial hair growth. Oily fish, such as salmon and mackerel, have been proven to boost testosterone in women and having a higher-than-normal level of this hormone can be responsible for excessive facial hair.
4. You can’t start a day without coffee.
If you can’t stand the thought of facing the day without your hot cup of java, we totally understand, but drinking coffee too often can actually jump-start testosterone production. Studies have shown that regularly drinking coffee for just 4 weeks can increase total testosterone levels in the body. If you aren’t ready to give up your daily cup of Joe, opt for decaf or instant coffee that contains slightly less caffeine.
5. You’re stressed out.
We live in a rapidly changing world, and avoiding stress is nearly impossible. But while feeling slightly stressed every now and then is perfectly normal, being under constant pressure can actually disrupt your body’s natural hormone balance. When your hormones are out of whack, it affects your overall health and can cause unwanted hair to grow faster.
6. You’re skimping on sleep.
Whether you’re binge-watching your favorite show or just enjoying some quiet time at night when the kids are finally asleep, not getting enough shut-eye can seriously affect your well-being and wreak havoc on your hormones. To avoid excessive facial hair growth, make sure to get at least 7 hours of beauty sleep at night.
