When Oshkosh B’Gosh, a children’s clothing company, was searching for new models, Meagan saw an opportunity for her 15-month-old son, Asher. He matched all the requirements: the right height, hair color, and eye color. Full of hope, Meagan sent Asher’s photos to the company.
However, the response was disheartening. The company’s representatives informed Meagan that they weren’t looking to feature a “baby with special needs” in their campaign. Meagan, understandably upset, couldn’t fathom why her son was rejected just because he has Down syndrome. Determined to challenge this decision, Meagan took action.
She shared Asher’s photos in a Facebook group for children with Down syndrome. The images, captured by photographer Crystal Barbee, showcased Asher’s charm in a blue denim shirt and bow tie. The post went viral, gaining over 100,000 likes. Meagan’s message was clear: Asher was ready to represent the true diversity of beauty.
Meagan also clarified that it was an agency, not Oshkosh B’Gosh directly, that had declined to use Asher. She partnered with the organization “Changing the Face of Beauty” to advocate for Asher’s inclusion in advertising.
